This was perhaps one of the more unusual dives we have done as it was in the aquarium at Skegness and was done as part of their Shark Experience. We had a long drive up there Saturday, for which Will volunteered to drive and an evening in Skegness with a walk around the aquarium and some amazing fish and chips before the dive Sunday morning.
On our arrival at the aquarium Sunday morning we were given a briefing on how their scuba gear worked, what we could expect from the dive along with what was expected of us and Will could not resist trying out their full face mask for the dive. We kitted up and climbed down the ladder onto the first platform at a depth of approximately 2 metres where we acquainted ourselves with the equipment and watched the fish swim around us. The fish were not at all fazed by our presence in their aquarium and were quite happily swimming up to us for a look, or maybe just checking if we had brought snacks for them.
We descended to the next level and worked our way around the tank. We were walking around the tank which, after years of not touching the bottom felt very strange indeed, and walking underwater is very different to walking on the land. We paused in one corner and the guide released a few snacks for the fish, which attracted them in droves and they had no problem barging you out of their way to get to the snacks. All except the Black Tip Reef Sharks, who just ignored us and carried on with what they were doing, the Cownose Rays were a little more inquisitive but they were far too engrossed in following each other around the tank to take any notice of us.
We proceeded to the main viewing window in the tank where we could watch the people in the aquarium watching us, a very strange experience being in scuba gear, underwater and watching people walking around only a couple of metres away. It was here we were introduced to giving the residents a grit bath. We were told to scoop up handfuls of grit and to slowly release it, the Pompano and Unicorn Fish absolutely loved it. They were queueing up to be showered, it was quite surprising and an amazing experience for us as well as the fish, and of course the sharks totally ignored us.
Sadly the dive was over far too soon and forty minutes after entering the pool we were on our way back to the ladder to leave the tank and the long drive home on a dull and grey Sunday afternoon.
Fancy joining us on the next dive?
Whether you're a seasoned diver or have never been underwater, we'd love to have you along.
